The Myth of the Perfect Grant Writer

We all know that a 100% success rate for a grant writer is a myth.  However, you are probably not looking for perfection – just really good results so that your organization can grow, thrive, and make a difference. And, wouldn’t it be nice if you could enjoy the process at the same time?

Take a moment and think about the proposals that you submitted in the last year. Maybe, take a look at your records and remind yourself about which applications they were. First, what was your success rate?

During the development process, how many times did you feel unsure that you were asking for the right thing or for the right amount? How often did you find yourself impinging on your personal time to get it finished? And, how many times did you wonder if there was just a more efficient, less stressful way to doing this?

Research conducted by the American Association of Grant Professionals indicates that the average success rate for professional grant developers is around 60%. Now, there is a huge amount of variation in there – from federal programs that fund 3% of submissions to family foundation donors who have supported organizations for a decade.
